40 miles is a good distance to take pause and review what needs tweaking (bike fit, clothing, gear) - that's far enough for things to start bothering you if they aren't quite right.

My own experience a year ago was that it was not difficult to increase distance on my longest ride from 28 to 50 miles; but I did progress too quickly and had some setbacks requiring a few weeks off the bike to heal up.
It was on the Trinity... Started in Benbrook up to 30 on the north east side and back..
like I mentioned flat, but its a nice ride, minus the walkers and their dogs..
