Good deal, my first real mtb was a trek 6500. Hardtails are good for begginers because it makes them learn skills they'd otherwise miss with a f/s.

I have come up with 2 bikes to choose from
-Specialized Rockhopper A1 FS (650)
-Gary Fisher Tassajara (599)
I am leaning torwards the Gary Fisher, dor under $600 it sure comes with great components.
