A few extra $$ spent on shorts or bib shorts will mean a few extra miles you can ride without discomfort.
And with helmets, you get what you pay for (in terms of lightness and ventalation), and it makes a big difference when you are riding for long distances in warm weather. But any modern bike helmet will protect your head about the same if you wear it.
