If you want to protect your ribs then karting rib vests probably offer the best protection. People have been known to crack their ribs because of the high Gs and the fibreglass seats that are strategically placed to punish your ribs to the max. Also, in karting if you have an off you may bounch up off your seat and come down hard on the seat edge directly on your ribs.

I'd bet rodeo gear is intended to take a beating (horsekick?).
