In terms of smell, I would say that the worst "road kill" I've ever experienced was a dead elephant seal (these things are huge, basically walrus-sized) that was washed up onto the beach - this was near Watsonville, CA, which is on the northern side of Monterey Bay, not too far south of Santa Cruz.

I don't know how long it had been there, but the stench was horrendous.
