Know several RAAM alumni.
Lon and his wife Susan also hold the mixed tandem record for RAAM.
Secrest did RAAM on an Assenmacher single back in the 80s.
Pete Penseyres and Lon Haldeman also did it on a tandem and hold the male/male tandem record.
This is an event definitely not for the faint of heart!
It is not only about ultra-cycling, but sleep deprevation and proper nutrition . . . most of it liquid.
In the 1980s Wayne Phillips attempted to ride RAAM self-contained and he was doing quite well until he was struck by a pickup truck. Ended up paralyzed and in a wheelchair. The next year, Wayne wheeled across Canada in his wheelchair!
Since that incident, support crews became mandatory.
Definitely takes a special kind of male or female to even attempt to do RAAM.
