I don't bicycle-commute anymore, but when I did, I always wore a helmet. I had several accidents over the years, all during my morning commute.
+1 - I've had no crashes racing, but several during my commute to/from work--idiotic mistakes that didn't involve motorists, but involved hitting gravel or some road imperfection at speed or catching a pedal in a turn. I've cracked a couple of helmets this way.
