Performance Team Bike Case Latches / Packing Instuctions

I just purchased a Performance Team Bike Case on Craigslist.

Pretty nice case but those latches stink. It is hard to align the case to get it to latch. Once you have the knack it is not too bad but I can't trust TSA to latch them.

I think I am going to replace them with draw latches that are found on equipment cases.

I can see where the existing ones can be popped open anyway. They don't seem all that strong.

If anyone has any better ideas please speak up.

I found the packing instructions on Performances website but basically, the instructions say put it in the case.

The case came with 2 or 3 white pedestals. At first I thought these were supports to keep the case from being crushed but if I stand them upright they are too long and the case does not close. Any idea what these are for? Or maybe something the previous owner added??

Any other tips on packing other than the obvious of protecting / padding everything and tying things down?
