Have you checked Ebay? There is a nice cannondale that is about 5 years old for $800. They have a bunch out there. My wife and I are in the same boat. We are going to try and work with the local bike shop as I believe in supporting them. By the way my local shop just told me Burleys are on back order with a 4 week delivery time which stinks becasue that was my first choice as they are known for being the "best bang for the buck".
