S+S Couplings

Have any of you guys had couplings installed, or are any riding bikes that came with them?

I have a custom coming next summer, and have been trying to figure out what to do with my current bikes. I have a cross bike (Kona JTS) and a steel road / touring, and find that I take the road / touring a lot more. I'm now thinking that when the custom comes, I'll sell the cross bike and keep the touring ride, but have couplings installed so i can easily travel with it.

Do couplings add a lot of weight? do they change the characteristics of the frame at all? The bike is already a little noodly (dedacciai steel), and i don't want to make it worse, but i like the idea of being able to throw it in the trunk of the car or into an airplane hold.
