Violence?

The real violence is the centuries of violence done to the people of Bolivia. Despite all of the riches that have been and continue to be taken out of the earth, the people of Bolivia are some of the poorest in the world. Bolivia is far more than picturesque women in bowler hats.

Your family has the luxury to take a two-year bicycle trip, in part, because of an accident of birth. It would be a good opportunity to teach about poverty and the response - and lack of response - to it. If anything, it appears from news reports that the protesters have shown considerable restraint.

Workdays that are 12-hours long - 7 days per week. Wages of $1 per hour. Child labor - children not much older than your boys. Electricity for the mine but not for residents. Unchecked environmental damage and risks to area residents. And water - in a desert the mine gets all the water it wants while local residents get little to none.

It is an opportunity to learn.
