New Orleans commuter

Hello all!

I recently ended up in New Orleans with no means of transportation. Being a pedestrian has proved to be a less than desireable way to get around, now I am on the hunt for a cheap reliable commuter bike. A friend from the Midwest told me to ask around on these forums.

I'm looking for a 24-26" steel frame MTB that's in good riding condition, not too worried about cosmetics. I'm trying to get back on my feet so I don't have a lot of cash, but can make regular payments if necessary.

Do any of the members here have tips or advice for commuting in this city? I've noticed the roads are pretty rough. Are there any particularly bad roads to avoid? I'd like to minimize wear and tear when I do get a bike. What's the best bike lock to get? I've noticed a high rate of bike thefts here.

Any and all input is greatly appreciated. Can't wait to become part of the community
