1985 raleigh team usa upgrade to hyperglide

hi all

I just came into a mint condition 71 cm (28") raleigh team usa road bike and have been upgrading it as best I can. I've changed the 27" front wheel to a nice mavic 700c (extended the slots in the brake calipers with a drill press), added speedplay pedals and a lightweight seat. The next step is to switch the 27" rim on the rear for the mavic 700c that matches the front. the problem is that the bike has the older chain gauge and chainwheel/freewheel geartooth spacing. the mavic rear wheel has a 9 speed shimano hyperglide cassette. the current chainwheel has 52 and 42 tooth rings on a 5-point spider. I was given a pair of shimano superglide chainrings, B-39 and B-58 stamped on the sides.

Local bike shops laugh at me or ask for about $220 for a new shimano bottom bracket/spider/chainwheel/crank set that _might_ fit. I hope there's a better way. is there a spider I can attach to this bike so these chainrings will fit? some other cheap solution?

thanks for any advice!

best,

josh

any thoughts? a few pictures attached.
