I remember seeing in some magazine a metal thing that connected to your seat post that looped out to your right and you would attach a short leash to the end and your dog would be connected to you.

Ive never done this, my dogs are small pugs so they could never keep up, its easier to walk them.

Id say just make sure he/she stays more to your side than behind you, you dont want he/she getting in front or behind you and getting caught on something, and probably make sure he/she has water..
