my ex-girlfriend had two pugs she would take on the trail with us. the young hyper one (who was also the dumbest dog i've ever met) would run all day and had no trouble keeping up with us; he loved it. the older one that wouldn't take a crap if it was raining out would run for about half a mile and then literally turn around and wait for us at the trailhead near the car. pugs are weird dogs.
