I still don't understand why it's a problem. Cover it up with the nut and you can't see it, plus your wheel grips the dropouts better because it's got something a little rough to bite into. So aesthetically, it looks the same and functionally, it works better.

If your bike doesn't have scratches, you're not riding it enough.
