Many people have shifters mounted on the bar tops on drop bars... however, usually they go up on the very top as close to the stem as possible.
This solves a couple problems: the whole handlebar except for right beside the stem can now be used for different hand positions; when taping the bar you can simply stop taping an inch before you get to the shifters - it does not look bad to have no tape close to the stem.
