If the chain is staying on the wheels, and they are not missing teeth, you should be okay. I have had problems that sound similar to yours and found that I wasn't getting enough chain wrap. (It definitely could be what Luker said - or possibly both problems). Check to see that the derailleur position is proper, that there is spring tension, and that the chain goes through the derailleur pulleys the right way (I got this wrong once and was quite puzzled until I figured out my mistake).
