I would consider these two bikes as true modern hybrids. The Giant Roam 1 is an especially good deal right now. My LBS has is priced at $550. From my home I have some wonderful rides that include both pavement and gravel/dirt Forest Service roads. I tried out the Roam 1 and really liked it, but it will be spring before I can afford a new bike. Trek has a cheaper version with rim brakes. There is also a Schwinn. I think it is called the Searcher Expert. The key to this type of hybrid is a suspension fork that has lockout so you can have a rigid fork for pavement.
I have road the Gaint Roam 1 ( awesome bike ), I have seen the Schwinn Searcher on the net, but have not road one, but
sounds good for 300.00 dollars I think..Richard
