From your description, it sounds like your spring need to be turned one more time - not an easy task, but not impossible either. I'm not sure exactly which year/model you have, but as I look up into the bottom of a Nuovo Record, I see six full turns of the spring wire with the seventh pass leading to the horizontal loop that rests on the body to give it tension.
