Could indexed shifters work for a Sturmey Archer hub?

I've read Sheldon's explanation for how to use a friction shifter for an AW hub. In a nutshell, it involves memorizing the correct position for 2nd (N) gear. All the way forward is 3rd (H) and all the way back is 1st (L).

So I'm wondering what would happen if I attached an indexed bar end shifter to an AW hub or, better yet, to an FW hub. Has anyone tried it? I figure I'd have to count clicks when shifting, and even then the spacing might be completely unworkable; but worth a try? Would an indexed shifter be strong enough to hold a 4-speed hub in bottom gear?
