Rough Roads vs. 1990 Miyata, new commuter?

Well I have been cycle commuting for roughly 7-8 months now and the effects of my local roads are started to show on my older road bike. The headset needs to be retightened, the frame is stiff, the small wheels making any medium sized pot hole seem like a crater, and the aggressive geometry limits visibility, wheels are coming untrue. Coming from a strictly road cycling background I wanted lots of speed and maneuverability, however the reality is that our city roads are in such disrepair that its more taxing to ride this type of bike.

I commute with a 1990 Miyata 721A.

Before I make a transition, is there anyone that has encountered the same problem riding a road bike as a commuter? What was the fix?

I believe a member posted this bike on the commuter forum, the utility and multi-functionality of this bike seems obvious. (mountain-commuter)
Good Choice?
