I had them on my Peugeot for many years. They are a high quality pedal with little friction. However, Michael W is correct, they were meant to be used with a special shoe-clip thingie. It had a groove in it. Once in, they were almost effective as modern clipless pedals.

However, I always had trouble getting the groove in the right spot. One ride, after looking down two different times and almost splatting oncoming traffic, I took them off and bought SPD's. I don't regret it.
