yep, SPD. i've done 2 centuries on SPD shoes/pedals and they worked fine. don't know much about touring, but my only concern would be that the surface area is pretty low compared to a road pedal, which might increase the likelihood of getting hot spots on long rides day after day. i think most touring pedals do have SPD cleats, though, so you're probably fine.
