Repair basics for touring

I'm planning a European tour coming up in a couple months and felt I should learn some basics for the road so I don't have to depend on bike shops when something minor happens to my bike. As far as bike maintenance goes, I've always relied on friends or LBS, so I basically know nothing other than how to fix a flat/change a tube.

Can anyone suggest what you'd consdier essential for an extended tour (going to spend about 2 months). I've been tinkering with tools all my life so it shouldn't be an issue learning, but I thought some advice from someone who's had much more experience than myself would be really helpful.

Thanks!
