It will take time to realize the impact of the quake, and ultimately recover from it as far as manufactured goods go. In many cases while the specific item is made elsewhere in Japan, or the world for that matter, many critical components or sub components come from factories in the affected area.

The effect is greater in the electronics world, but can ripple through other products in subtle ways, for example if production machinery requires replacement parts no longer available. Right now people are looking for and finding alternate sourcing, and things will get back to close to normal, but there could be surprise shortages in 2011.
