I think these may be called box-section rims as opposed to aero-style rims. Also I doubt owners of aero-style rims are riding fast enough to warrant the use of aerodynamic rim shapes. There is obviously an advantage but I feel it's mostly an aesthetic choice on wheelbuilds for cat3-4-5 racers, commuters, and fixie kids.
