knee injury

For the last two months or so I have been having a problem with my right knee, right in the middle of the knee cap. it becomes irritated when I ride and when I swim. I was doing some speed walking, but I have stopped that because it brought on the pain. It doesn't hurt terribly, but it is very tender and makes my knee weak. Previously, i was diagnosed with patellar tendonitis when I was running. Once I stopped running it went away. I think that this is what it is again. I spoke to an orthopedic doctor this evening, and he said that I should rest it for a couple of weeks (ugh! that really gets me down). Wants me to stretch the hamstrings and to put warm compresses on it. Anybody else have experience with this kind of tendonitis? Truthfully, it does get better when I rest, but honestly, I have been taking it easy for almost two months. But I only rested it completely for about a week.
