newbie, which bike?

I'd like to start doing some casual riding around the neighborhood, mostly on paved, haven't ridden in decades. Ease of pedaling more important than speed. Looking at entry level hybrids, $400ish as I don't know how often I'll get to ride. Nearest bike shops sell Giant.
Looking at a couple of Cypress models and a couple of Sedonas, women's models. Should I get an aluminum frame with a suspension fork, or go with one of the cromo steel models that have a rigid cromo fork?
I don't know which one is actually lighter. Have been told the cromo/rigid fork is a better choice for me but would like to hear from a few others, since the shops seem to push the alum. Any advice for me? I don't want to make the wrong choice. Thanks for your help! I know next to nothing about frames, etc.

I also asked in Hybrids but haven't received replies yet.
I'm enjoying the forum! Thanks-
