I didn't get to race the Driveway last week, but one of my teammates got into a break of 7 (tough bridging effort), and they stayed away. There was one team with four, and one team with two in the break, and my guy.
So, he got 2nd. Anyone want to guess what he did in the break? Anyone want to guess what the team of 4 was screaming at him about after the race?
There's a transformation where racers stop racing like 4s and start racing like they understand how races work. Some do that when they're 4s, and some not until they are 2s... but these 3s were clearly not there yet.
If you're a sprinter, can add in your head, the other teams have more than you, and the break is stable off the front, you sit. That's just what you do.
If you have a lot of teammates in the break, at least some of you are going to have to work. If you realize there's a guy sitting in for the sprint, you have to gap him off or attack him off. Yelling at him for not pulling simply will not cause him to lose the sprint. Yelling at him after the race probably has even less of a chance of changing the outcome. I think.
