Are modern bicycles more difficult to ride?

Children are all different.

My son learned to ride a 2-wheeler in a couple of hours, when he was five. He was ( and still is ) the most uncoordinated child on the planet, but is a now a miniature Lance on his bike.

My daughter is very athletic, and is invariably willing to try anything. She couldn't ride a 2-wheeler until she was 7, after many, many, MANY days of practice. There were days when I thought she'd never figure out how to balance.
