Hi and welcome to the forums. The more upright bike isn't a bad start really, my husband bought me a specialized Sirrus which I rode for years and just recently got a real road bike. The main issue will be the rear suspension...really kills your efficiency and adds a ton of weight. Your best bet may be to find something used on Craigslist that needs some work. Hubby picked up another Sirrus for our nephew on CL for $60 because it wouldn't shift properly, new derailleur hanger and chain later and it works perfectly.
