I wholeheartedly agree that it sucks. On the other hand, I'm sure that a company their size has an "client retention" buffer built into their warranty budget. I wouldn't hate on Giant for playing the game. It probably isn't costing anyone anything.
If the customer came into my shop, I'd try to warranty it too, all while trying to coax out the real story. The customer knows what happened, the engineers at Giant know what happened. Everyone would be happier if the truth was the real truth.
