Thanks for all the responses and suggestions. I do have a bungee net holding everything down in the back, and usually there isn't a lot of room for bouncing. I thought so, anyway!

I think I'll try padding, and also see if I can figure out a way to get my u-lock out of the basket. I can't imagine what else would be breaking them - they way they fail looks like impact fractures, not stress fractures. If all else fails, I found a couple of different types of stainless steel bowls with plastic or silicone lids. As one poster said, if I can kill those, I'm in trouble! They are pricey though, an old towel is cheaper.
