I don't see this having much of a biking application, actually, but it could have real promise for people who have severe mobility issues. If one can shift a bike, one can do all sorts of interesting things to do with moving artificial limbs and such, I'd imagine.
That's what I got out of the article, the bicycle is just the demonstrator for the technology. Scary smart people at work!
