Perhaps the oval shapes aggravate the little bit of OCD in all of us.
Perhaps they should have marketed them as "they seem funny now, but when you get old and your knees are shot, you'll love them..."
Perhaps bike mechanics didn't like trying to line up the FD on them.
Perhaps it was the name. Maybe they should have used something that sounded less medical.
