Clyclocross bikes are indeed versatile but they are meant for cyclocross racing and tend to be rather pricey.
The more casual rider would likely do well with what we used to call a hybrid but companies now call "fitness" or "comfort" bikes. These have a mountain-bike control layout and upright riding position, but road-sized 700C wheels and intermediate tires.
These have a couple of other advantages, they are relatively inexpensive and also not frequently stolen....
