I'm only a couple months in and I find that if I'm off for more than a few days I pay for it, a week off can be downright dread inducing... I prefer every day for shorter fitness rides (up to about 10mi) and every couple days if I'm pushing longer (not necessarily faster) rides... play with it until you find your best method... either way though, just getting miles is going to help...
