I hear Marathon Plus tyres are notoriously hard to fit.

The first time I ever removed a tyre in my life I took off a worn out Marathon Plus (that the bike shop fitted) and fitted a Marathon Extreme to replace it. Yes it was fiddly but having never done anything quite like it in my life I wasn't exactly an expert.

Add another vote for slow leakage which is normal. Something else I learned when I was new to cycling when my 70psi tyres seemed soft and had dropped to more like 30psi, over the course of a few weeks.
