A basic inspection before you ride is in order. Check that the steering isn't loose, that the QR skewers or axle bolts are tight, that your tires are inflated within the recommended pressure range, that brakes are functioning and that the chain is tensioned properly (on a bike without a derailleur or chain tensioning device).

It sounds like you didn't inspect the chain tension.
