Sounds like you had an X4 model, so you'll want to stick with SRAM's X-series to match the cable pull of your current rear shifter. Just figure out from your old one whether you need the "long cage" or "medium cage" version.

There may also be damage to your frame, particularly the derailleur hanger (where the rear mech (derailleur) bolts on). A mechanic at your local bike shop should be able to easily determine whether the hanger is bent and replace it or repair it.
