Sounds like the OP knew a 54 was right, but picked the 56 because it was available. That's his fault, not the shop's. Regardless, the geometry between a 54 and 56 is so minute that simple adjustments should easily compensate. My bike is a Giant M/L and says 5'10'-6' right on the lable. I'm 5'8". Switched the 100 stem for an 80 and it's fine.
