If you travel that much couplers may be worth it. Zinn's setup allows him to pack his bike without taking the stem off the steerer, the bars off the stem (the two things that take the longest to put together), and probably pack everything in a non-oversize case. You'll have to do a frame in Ti or steel though, stem as well.

I only fly a few round trips a year - I find Southwest's $50 each way fee to be a good compromise between airlines and bike fees. It's still a bit of money though.
I've thought about a Ritchey breakaway, but those go for $1200, and I already had a spare bike, so I went with the shipping route. Southwest does have better than most fees, but the only airlines that fly out of where I live are Continental and American. Both have hefty oversized fees.
