What fork do you have on the bike now? What do you mean by "slop" in the fork? Did you crash bad enough to damage the fork requiring a replacement?
I'm not sure a 20mm difference will do that much - I went from 50mm to 80mm and only noticed the difference when doing upwards of 35mph, which doesn't happen too often, but maybe my old forks were strange and had little travel anyway.

Nonetheless, I struggle to see why you couldn't stick with 100mm - that's quite a bit of travel.

And WRT brands, I think mid range RockShox are meant to be good.
