Here's a picture taken after a particularly muddy race last year:
There's a front derailleur somewhere under that clump of mud and grass above the chain. Compare that to the pedal.
I like the new Egg Beater 2's. I've put 2000 miles and a dozen or so races on a pair I got last year and they are still spinning smoothly.
