The part about beating your own personal record on the bike is great - congratulations!

The extreme guilt and penance thing regarding breaking your diet, not so much. If the approach to dieting and weight loss takes on the same obsessive-compulsive characteristics as overeating had, can it really succeed, long term? (For me, the answer has been no, but YMMV.)
