... to avoid this perhaps you could use my motto: everyone else is stupid and not paying attention... if you want something to happen, you have to do it yourself. In this particular instance: regardless of what the car does or does not do... go around or slow down, they are likely not looking anyway and this allows you to continue un-fork-damaged. Case for point: A few weeks ago I was riding my typical 30mi evening ride. Traffic was being courteous the whole time; the offender: a MTB'r who cut right in front of me: this was not only Very confusing, but Very unexpected. He pulled out of a shopping complex and wasn't looking for bikes (just like car drivers) and I had to flatten a spot on my tubulars (I was pissed). Luck was that my tires rocked and I halted on a dime from 30mph (downhill...). This is just another example, I am sure there are many more. Don't assume they will act logically or rationally or honestly, because they don't.
