In my experience certainly loose shorts are a bad thing. I go for a tight fit without feeling uncomfortable!!
I also find that you need to try different brands until you find one that suits YOU.
In general the cheaper shorts are OK but they don't last as long and the chamois is generally thinner and hence less comfortable for those long rides.
