too bad kevin isn't riding through texas. years ago on the Adventure Cycling Southern Tier route, which used to pass through El Paso, BTW, maybe it still does, i enjoyed by trip through Texas. over to marathon, past McDonald observatory, to del rio and through the hill country, with a loooong downhill along the Guadalupe River. very nice.

east Texas? not so good, but it was mainly due to the poor roads. which suffered primarily by a too coarse aggregate in the the chip seal.
Will be touring in Big Bend in April. Sure was hoping there'd be none of that dastardly chip seal that's everywhere in east Texas. It's not just east Texas. Worst I've ever encountered was on Padras Island near Corpus Christi. If drivers understood what this stuff does to gas mileage and tire wear, they'd revolt.
