Basically just ditch the larger and smaller chain rings and swap the front derailer for a chain guide. Remove front shifter and cable and you're 1x9 or whatever you have in the rear. What do you mean by "what are the best components?" You could spend a Lot of money, so maybe specify your goals a little more here.
